"Zonian Memories" at "Oh the Ocean" Exhibition in San Francisco

- I was born and grown up in the Zone. I’m a Zonian.
- Zonian ?
- We all call ourselves Zonians
- What do you mean ?
- The former Canal Zone was a 10-mile-wide strip, a U.S. government reservation in which only militaries and employees of the Panama Canal Company and their families could live. Stores, transportation, employment, schools—everything was under the control of the U.S. government. On December 31, 1999, the United States turned the canal over to Panama. This included all operations, jobs, and properties. Today, there is no more Zone. The Canal is owned and operated by the government of Panama.
- Do you miss it ?
- We had our own Zonian culture, It is our lost tropical utopia.

(conversation with R in Balboa, Panama. 2014)
